21st Screen Actors Guild Awards

The Screen Actors Guild Awards strive to honor actors who have showcased extraordinary talent in film and television during the past year. Considered one of the industry's highest and most prized honors as it is a peer voted honor, the SAG Awards are the only televised awards to exclusively honor performers. The show consists of 13 awards for acting in film and  television during a two hour show aired live on TNT and TBS from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

A complete winner's list can be found here.

Some of the night's biggest winners were: Patricia Arquette in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role category for her role in Boyhood. J.K. Simmons won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his role in Whiplash, giving the distinct impression that he is a shoo-in for the Oscar.  Eddie Redmayne won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in Leading Role for his role The Theory of Everything. Kevin Spacey took home the actor for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for his role in House of Cards. Downton Abbey won for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series while Orange is the New Black won for Comedy Series; Uzo Aduba also took home the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for the series.  Viola Davis won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actress in a Drama Series for How to Get Away With Murder. Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in Leading Role was awarded to  Julianne Moore for her role in Still Alice.  Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture was awarded to the cast of Birdman

Debbie Reynolds was rightfully and deservedly honored with the Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award which was presented to her by her daughter, Carrie Fisher. She gave an endearing speech that included true sentiments of gratitude and some teasing about Princess Leia buns.

Given these results, it is likely, but in no way guaranteed, that Simmons and Moore will take home Oscars come February 22nd.  Birdman remains the top contender for Best Motion Picture.

Other Guild awards are held as followed but are not televised:
26th Annual Producers Guild Awards - January 24, 2015

NHL All-Star Spotlight Justin Faulk

Congrats Justin
On June 26, 2010 in the Staples Center the Carolina Hurricanes made the 37th overall pick; they picked a young man by the name of Justin Faulk from St. Paul, Minnesota. Now at the age of 22 he leads all defenseman on the team with 26 points so far and averages around 26 minutes a game.

Faulk signed a big contract in March 2014 for 6 years 29 million dollars; a contract that is worth every penny for what this young man brings to the team. In his young age he is very mature and already has the leadership of a veteran player.

For at 22 year old hockey player he is very accomplished already;  he was a member of Team USA U-17 and U-18 teams, winning gold with the U-18 team at the IIHF World U-18 Championships. He was a member of the 2011 NCAA National Champion University Minnesota Duluth, he was on the 2012 NHL All-Rookie Team at the 2012 NHL All-Star Weekend in Ottawa. For this young man I think his biggest accomplishment came on January 1, 2014 when he was names to the 2014 USA Olympic team that was heading to Sochi, Russia for the Winter Games.

Just like Skinner, Lindholm, and Rask; Justin Faulk is the future of the Carolina Hurricanes and is showing everyone why. He might bring this rough and tough physical game on the ice but off the ice he is a wonderful person. Justin is actively involved with the Kids and Community Foundation and always loves getting out with the kids and showing them some hockey basics. These are the things an NHL player like Justin Faulk is all about, its not always about what you do on the ice but also about how you carry yourself and how you represent the community and Justin for only being 22 years old is one of the most respect Hurricanes in the locker room already.

That's why on January 10th when Justin Faulk was named to the NHL All-Star game in Columbus no one was surprised. CONGRATULATIONS JUSTIN and we will be cheering for you in Raleigh.

Here is a list of the weekend events starting tonight!

Friday: NHL All-Star Draft on NBC Sports at 8:00 p.m.
Saturday: NHL All-Star Skills Competition on NBC Sports at 7:00 p.m.
Sunday: NHL All-Star Game on NBC Sports at 5:00 p.m.

Finally Some Winning...... But is it Too Late?!?!?

Caniac's Still Waiting
2015 has been a complete turn around for the Carolina Hurricanes; they are starting to look like a team that should have showed up back in September. The Carolina Hurricanes are currently in 28th place in the league with 37 points and hold a record of 16-25-5. At the current pace the Hurricanes are on pace to get roughly 65 or less points on the whole season which will not get you into the
playoffs once again. To put that number into perspective; Anaheim has played 46 games (same as the Hurricanes) and has 66 points that is leading the whole league.

When the calendar flipped and the key pieces returned to the line-up so did the Hurricanes, for the month of January they hold a record of 6-2-1. For many long-term fans this is not usual; they are a team that is always playing better hockey in the second half of the season. This season is one of those unique ones that it doesn't matter what the team does in the spring because they had such a horrible first half that they cant dig out and go for that playoff push like previous season.

The Hurricanes are just trying to salvage some part of the season; players are really starting to click and make themselves look good for other teams that might need them for a spot into the summer. Some players that have found a stride in the month of January are Eric and Jordan Staal, Brad Malone, Jay McClemet, Patrick Dwyer, and Anton Khudobin.

Brad Malone
With Jordan Staal returning to the line-up on December 29th it has sparked not just team but his brother Eric as well. Eric Staal has found his confidence and scoring touch that everyone has known for the past 10 season. With both Staal's on a line that makes Carolina a bigger and stronger team. The 4th line of Brad Malone- Jay McClement- Patrick Dwyer are the strongest of this team and the only line that has not been touched since they found their scoring touch. Brad Malone came over from Colorado and brought a physical game with him. Once he got that first goal the flood gates opened, he has 3 goals now and is piling on the assists.

The goal tending is the one things that has not been called into question this season for the Hurricanes; both Cam Ward and Anton Khudobin have been amazing. It took Dobby a little longer to get his first win of the season but since then he has won 5 of his last starts in net. We might be seeing some players leave to head to a playoff contender but that is part of the business and Ron Francis has already said that he will only made the trade if it makes our team better.

With the All-Star break upon us now, this gives the Hurricanes some time to heal up and get ready to continue playing good team hockey. Hurricanes return from break with a 7:30 start at PNC against the Tampa Bay Lighting.

In the Action category, Bradley Cooper took home Best Actor in an Action Movie for American Sniper, while Emily Blunt won Best Actress in an Action Movie for Edge of Tomorrow and Guardians of the Galaxy was awarded Best Action Movie.  The Lego Movie took home Best Animated Film, which meant even more after a snub this morning in the Oscar nominations.

Costner was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, Ron Howard was presented with the LOUIS XIII Critics' Choice Genius Award which honors an icon who has demonstrated unprecedented excellence in the cinematic arts, and Jessica Chastain received the first ever Critics' Choice MVP Award recognizing her as an extraordinary actor for her work in multiple standout movies (Interstellar, Miss Julie, A Most Violent Year, and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby) in a single year.

One of the best takeaways of this year's show is Jessica Chastain's speech accepting the Critics' Choice MVP Award: Today’s Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. And, it got me thinking about our need to build the strength of diversity in our industry, and to stand together against homophobic, sexist, misogynistic, anti-Semitic, and racist agendas. I’m an optimist, and I can’t help but feel hopeful about the future of film, especially looking at all these beautiful people in this room. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” I would like to encourage everyone in this room to please speak up. Thank you.

The nominees for the night's biggest category are:

This past year saw its fair share of amazing films made, from big blockbuster hits to small indie projects. The Oscars race is a difficult thing as accolades do not singularly determine a film's worth, and many great films have gone, and will go, unrecognized. All of the films in the Best Picture category deserve their spot there, and yet there are many more films that could easily have been one of the eight nominees.

Leading the nominations is Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel with nine nominations each followed by The Imitation Game which received eight nominations.

Star Wars from Marvel: A New Series for Comic-lovers

At San Diego Comic Con last year, fans of Star Wars saw the announcement of three new series from Marvel, all of them focusing on our favorite characters from a galaxy far, far away.

Today, fans across the U.S. celebrated the release of series 1, issue 001.

The issue is written by Jason Aaron, drawn by John Cassaday, colored by Laura Martin, and lettered by Chris Eliopoulos. And the team has created something truly incredible for the future of the Star Wars saga! (Note: we are spoiler-free here!)

Along with the cover above, there are dozens of variant covers that have been illustrated by some of the best artists in the business.  To get an idea of some of the variants, check this out.

The series is highly anticipated, most comic shops selling out before the day began. Don't worry, the comics can be found online at eBay (for print copies), Marvel (for digital copies and directions to a local store for print copies), and online stores like Mile High Comics (for print copies of variant covers).

This series marks the return of the Star Wars saga to Marvel, who published Comics for the series from 1977-1987.  Dark Horse Comics took over as the publisher of Star Wars comics in 1991.  Once Disney bought Lucasfilm, it was only a matter of time before the transition was made.  Now, every comic that has been released before 2015, whether Marvel or Dark Horse, is considered to be part of the Legends Universe in the Star Wars realm.  Today's comic is the first comic that is officially in the Star Wars canon.

In February and March of this year, Star Wars fans can expect two more series focusing on two specific characters: Darth Vader and Princess Leia.  In the new issue (out today), fans can catch a brief glimpse of the two upcoming series.

For more info on Star Wars, be sure to check out their website, Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr.
Be sure to check out Marvel's website for official news on Marvel tv shows, comics and movies.

Golden Globe Awards 2015

The 72nd annual Golden Globe Awards were broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel and produced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and Dick Clark Productions.  Tina Fey and Amy Poehler returned to host the awards for the their third consecutive year, and the last year of their contract.  Their monologue was as hilarious as ever and poked fun at the Sony Hack, the fact that George Clooney is getting a lifetime achievement award when his wife, Amal, probably deserves one more, the Cosby sexual assault allegations, and much more. Here's hoping they are asked to host again very soon, or move up to hosting the Oscars.

The night included a surprise appearance by Prince, and Margaret Cho dressing up as the newest member of the HFPA, a North Korean journalist, taking a picture with Meryl Streep, and commenting  on the show's quality as well as Orange is the New Black's placement into the comedy category. Bill Hader and Kristin Wiig cracked themselves up quoting not-so-famous movie lines from various films before presenting the award for Best Screenplay and Tina Fey looked great in a tuxedo.

Heading into the awards, Birdman led the way with the most film nominations, seven, followed by Boyhood and The Imitation Game which each had five nominations and Fargo held the most television nominations with five.

Birdman took home Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical for Michael Keaton and Best Screenplay presented to screenwriter Alejandro González Iñárritu.  Boyhood won Best Motion Picture - Drama, Richard Linklater took home the award for Best Director, and Patricia Arquette won Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for the film. The Grand Budapest Hotel was awarded Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical. Eddie Redmayne was awarded Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for The Theory of Everything. Amy Adams won Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical for her role in Big Eyes. Julianne Moore took home Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama for Still Alice.  Into the Woods did not take home a single award.

Fargo took home best Miniseries or TV Movie beating out it's main rival, True Detective, and Best Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries for Billy Bob Thornton.  Kevin Spacey won Best Actor in a Television Series - Drama for his role in House of Cards, his first Golden Globe win and eighth nomination.   Maggie Gyllenhaal won Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie for The Honorable Woman. The Affair took home the award for Best Television Series -Drama and Best Actress in a Television Series - Drama for Ruth Wilson.

George Clooney was presented with the Cecil B. Demille Award for Lifetime Achievement and gave a moving speech which touched upon the fact that winning is far from everything and a mention of how proud he is to be his wife's husband.

A full list of winners can be found here.

People's Choice Awards 2015

The 41st Annual People's Choice Awards awarded today's most popular shows, movies, and stars live from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles.  Mom stars Anna Faris and Allison Janney hosted the show. The biggest stars of today were in attendance for the event which was kicked off by a sub-par monologue from the hosting duo which included them poking fun at their being asked to host.

The night included performances from Lady Antebellum ("Freestyle"), Fall Out Boy ("Centuries"), and Iggy Azalea ("Beg For It"). Wacky antics took place throughout the show by the hosts as well as the presenters, some including the use of selfie sticks, calling their moms and backup dancers that were incredibly unnecessary. It would also appear that Walgreens was a participating sponsor or a lot of people in attendance are individually employed as spokespeople.

Some of the night's big winners were Stana Katic who took home awards for Favorite TV Crime Drama and Favorite TV Dramatic Actress (and queen of the red carpet), and Big Bang Theory which took home Favorite TV Show and Favorite Network TV Comedy. Adam Sandler took home his ninth career PCA for Favorite Comedic Movie Actor.  Ben Affleck was presented with the Choice Humanitarian Award for his work with Eastern Congo and Betty White took home the Favorite TV Icon award. Carolina Hurricanes Start 2015 Strong!!!!

Jordan Returns
On Monday December 29th the Carolina Hurricanes did not get the victory that they had hoped against the Montreal Canadiens but they did get a BIG piece of their line up back.... Jordan Staal! The  Assistant Captain made his first appearance of the season after returning from a broken leg that was suffered in a preseason game against Buffalo back in September.

With the calendar turing to 2015 and Jordan back in the lineup the Hurricanes are starting to put the pieces of the puzzle together. They opened with 2015 with a game against Metro Division rival the Philadelphia Flyers; the Flyers who are also in an uphill battle came ready to play. Brad Malone started the scoring getting his first goal of the season; Malone over the past 4 games has played his best of the season and starting to show some chemistry with his line. In the 2nd period Jordan Staal set his brother Eric up for this 10th of season. That goal extended Eric's Point streak to 4 games and put Jordan 2 points in 2 games so far this season. The 2 goals were all the Hurricanes need to put the Flyers away and walk away with 2 points.

In a post game interview the Captain said it best about what the difference maker was; he showed a smile and said "we got 2". It has been hard for the Hurricanes this season getting more then one goal but for 2015 it seems the tide has shifted.

Eric Staal

On a rare early Sunday afternoon game the Hurricanes faced the Boston Bruins who came to town on the back end of a back to back situation that saw them lose the afternoon before to the Senators in OT. The Hurricanes got a first period goal from Patrick Dwyer to close out the 1st period but what key to the first period was that Khudobin did not see a single Bruins shot till almost the 17 minute mark of the 1st period. The Hurricanes continued to show dominance in all the zones for the 2nd and 3rd period. Boston finally got one past Dobby late in the 2nd but that would be the only Boston goal on the board.

The game needed extra time that took a unique turn in the OT period; there were matching penalties that allowed fans to see some 3 on 3 hockey. 3 on 3 OT hockey is something the coaches and league are looking into for the future of the NHL. Plenty of shots in OT but nothing saw the back of the net so we went to a shootout. The 3 shooters for Boston were Reilly Smith, Torey Krug, and Patrice Bergeron and the 3 shooters for the Carolina Hurricanes were Chris Terry, Jeff Skinner, and Eric Staal.

The only player to find the net was Eric Staal; earning the Hurricanes the extra point, their 2nd win of 2015 and earning Eric the Hurricanes Fireman Helmet. This win also got Dobby his first win against his former team and his second win of the season.

Anton Khudobin
The Hurricanes are in Nashville tonight to try and extend their win streak to 3 for 3 in 2015. This is also the annual Father's Trip for the Hurricanes as well. The Hurricanes return home on January 8th to face Buffalo.

NHL Winter Classic Blackhawks Vs. Capitals Recap

Since 2008 the NHL has created a tradition of having an outdoor hockey game in a football or baseball stadium featuring 2 of the hottest teams in the NHL. January 1, 2015 is no different; the location is Washington D.C. and the teams are the Washington Capital and the Chicago Blackhawks. Both teams have been on this stage before; Washington in 2011 playing in Pittsburgh at Heinz Field and Chicago in 2009 hosting the Red Wings in Wrigley Field.

Home Plate at Nationals Park
Entering today Washington has a record of 8-1-3 and the Blackhawks in their last 16 games are 13-2-1. There were 42, 832 hockey fans from all over ready to experience something special and they sure got what they came to see.  It was a prefect day for hockey the temperature holding around 40 degrees and the sun not really an issue.

The teams entered to a roaring Nationals Park the through  replica Capitol building that was in the outfield and skated to a reflection pool while the flag was displayed on the ice during the anthem. There were also performance by Billy Idol, Gavin DeGraw, and Lee Greenwood.

Ovi Goal in 1st Period
In the first period the Capitals jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with goals from Eric Fehr (3 goals in 2 Classic appearances)  and Alex Ovechkin. The goalies switched ends at the halfway point of the 1st period; which is customary of this event to give each team a chance to deal with the sun glare. After switching ends the Blackhawks went on a Powerplay after a holding call on Nicklas Backstrom; Patrick Sharp cashed in quickly and cut the lead to 1 heading in the 2nd Period.

The Capitals start the 2nd period very quick with Ovechkin ringing 2 shots off the posts of the goal. On a beautiful pass from Blackhawks Captain Jonathan Toews, Brandon Sadd scores on an empty net and ties the game at 2-2.

The game remained tied at 2 till the very final seconds of the 3rd period. It looked like we were heading to OT like many other Classics had; but Ovechkin got slashed in the process of shooting and Troy Brouwer (former Blackhawk)  collected the rebound and scored the winner with 12.6 seconds left.

Patrick Sharp with media
Capitals WIN and becoming only the second home team to actually win The Classic; Boston in 2010 is the other team. Brad Paisley said earlier today " Today is the 1st blank page of a 365 page book, make it a good one." Well I would say that the Capitals first page is a memorable one; now they just need to keep it going and make that playoff push to run for the Stanley Cup!!!

Three Stars
1. Alex Ovechkin: 1 Goal 1 Assist
2. Patrick Sharp: 1 Goal
3. Troy Bouwer: Game Winner

Capitals play the Florida Panthers on Sunday and the Blackhawks play the Dallas Stars on Sunday.
