The Wiz Live! on NBC

Since 2013, NBC has produced a live musical adaptation every year at the beginning of December as a holiday tradition.  2013 saw a production of The Sound of Music starring Carrie Underwood and last year's production was Peter Pan starring Allison Williams as Peter.  This year NBC did a production of The Wiz with an all-star cast including Mary J. Blige, Queen Latifah, David Alan Grier, Uzo Aduba, Common, Ne-Yo, Amber Riley, Stephanie Mills and 18-year-old Shanice Williams as Dorothy.

Stephanie Mills played Dorothy in the Original Broadway production of The Wiz and brings Aunt Em to life in the made-for-tv live show. Shanice Williams was cast after a nationwide talent search, and can she ever sing! Speaking of singing, it worked in the show's favor to cast current singers including Ne-Yo, Common and Mary J. Blige as the songs are one of the best parts of The Wiz and they delivered them with the heart and soul they were intended to have.

The show was co-produced by Cirque de Soleil's theatrical division and the choreography during the tornado demonstrated this right off the bat. The crows and monkeys flying was also a nice touch. We also enjoyed the choreography during the Emerald City sequence and "Brand New Day."

The singing throughout the show was amazing. Amber Riley and Shanice Williams singing "He's the Wizard" was a great introduction to the world of Oz.  "Ease on Down the Road," "Be a Lion," Ne-Yo singing "What Would I Do If I Could Feel?" and Mary J. Blige singing "Don't Nobody Bring Me No Bad News" were some of our other favorite performances. "Brand New Day" was even more fierce during the show than it was at the Macy's Day parade. Uzo Aduba singing the "Believe in Yourself (Reprise)" was worth waiting until the end of the show for and Shanice Williams singing "Home" brought us to tears.

Bravo on this one, NBC!

Beautifiul - The Carole King Musical on Tour

The writing duos of Carole King & Gerry Goffin and Cynthia Weil & Barry Mann wrote many of the top hits of the 1960s and 1970s.  Beautiful- The Carole King Musical tells the story of a sixteen year old girl  from Brooklyn who becomes one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time.  The story is exciting and fun but also very real and emotional, and it is coupled with an incredible B-plot of the relationship between Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann.

I had the privilege to see the original Broadway cast including Jessie Mueller as Carole King, who won a Tony for the role, and it was one of the best musicals I had ever seen (and the first time I saw the show I had a standing room only ticket, so I sincerely mean that).  When it was announced that the show would be going on tour I knew I would have to make it a point to see it!

My excitement was further escalated by the announcement that Abby Mueller would be playing Carole King! Yes, she is the sister of Jessie Mueller, but that's not the only reason it's great that she's playing Carole King.  She is also a fantastic musical theater performer in her own right, and she brings her own unique aspects to the portrayal of Carole King.  The rest of the cast is also incredible! Liam Toby plays Gerry Goffin, Ben Fankhauser, who was recently seen as 'Henry' in North Carolina Theatre's production of Next to Normal, plays Barry Mann and Becky Gulsvig plays Cynthia Weil.  And you can't forget about the excellent ensemble of actors who bring the music to life in a big way!

I can't say much of anything that's new about why this show is so incredible and truly a must-see, but I will tell you I got my mom tickets for her birthday and had to basically drag her to see the show with me, but I chose to drag her because I knew she would thoroughly enjoy it. Since we saw the show, she has told every single person she has encountered that they need to get to DPAC immediately and see this fantastic show!

Here are just a few of the local reviews Beautiful - The Carole King Musical has received:

Beautiful - The Carole King Musical is playing at DPAC through October 4 and then moves on to the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C..  You can find all of the upcoming tour dates here. Don't miss this incredible show when it comes to a city near you!

67th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards

The 67th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Andy Samberg, took place on Sunday Night September 20th.  The awards were presented during a FOX live telecast from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

In Samberg's first time as host, his opening was like the opening skit of an episode of SNL and starred some of this year's nominees...it was awesome!  It felt like he hit the nail on the head in terms of providing the new angle the Academy was looking for when they chose him as this year's host.

Some of the best moments of the night included Ricky Gervais pretending he won the Emmy, the "World's Best Boss" mug for Lorne Michaels (but actually Shonda Rimes), Andy's performance of "I'd Like to Give the World an Emmy", metal detectors on the red carpet, and Tracy Morgan's appearance to announce the winner of Outstanding Drama Series.

VEEP won Outstanding Comedy Series.  Julia Louis-Dreyfus won Lead Actress in a Comedy for her role in VEEP, and Tony Hale won Supporting Actor in a Comedy for his role in the series, his second category win for the role.  Jeffrey Tambor won Lead Actor in a Comedy for his role in Transparent, Jill Soloway also won the Emmy for Directing for the series.  Allison Janney won Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her role in Mom, her 7th career Emmy.

Olive Kitteridge swept the Limited Series categories wining 6 Emmys for Writing, Directing, Supporting Actor, Lead Actress, Lead Actor, and Outstanding Series.  The one other televised award in the category, Supporting Actress, went to Regina King for American Crime.

Game of Thrones won awards for Directing and Writing in a Drama Series, Oustanding Drama Series, and Supporting Actor in a Drama for Peter Dinklage.  Uzo Aduba won Supporting Actress in a Drama for her role in Orange is the New Black.  Jon Hamm (finally) won the Emmy for Lead Actor in a  Drama for playing Don Draper in Mad Men. Viola Davis took home Lead Actress in a Drama for How To Get Away With Murder, making her the firs African American woman to win the category.

One thing I personally enjoyed was the way they announced the nominees for Writing and Directing in a Comedy Series by asking the writers what was the hardest part of writing for a comedy and directors what are the best skills to have as a Comedy director.
