American Music Awards 2014

November 23, live from the Nokia Theatre in LA, the American Music Awards showcased and awarded the biggest names in music today.  Pitbull hosted the awards for the second year in a row, following the ratings success of last year's show. His opening monologue left a lot to be desired in the way of humor and wit.

Opening the show was Taylor Swift with the television premiere of her latest single "Blank Space". The performance, complete with set pieces and an ensemble of dancers, felt like it was straight out of the music video and was exactly what her fans and the audience wanted to see. Imagine Dragons thrilled the audience with "I Bet My Life".  Other performance highlights included Selena Gomez premiering her emotional new single "The Heart Wants What the Heart Wants", One Direction performing "Night Changes", Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea singing "Bang Bang" and Iggy Azalea and J.Lo premiering "Booty".

The night's big winners were One Direction who took home three awards for Artist of the Year, Favorite Band, Duo or Group and Pop/Rock album honors for Midnight Memories.  Despite being halfway across the world and the heat from both Iggy Azalea and Lorde, Katy Perry took home a total three awards for Pop/Rock Female, Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist, and Single of the Year for "Dark Horse".  While Iggy Azalea had the largest number of nominations, six, going into the awards, she took home only two for Favorite Hip Hop/Rap Artist and Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Album.  Taylor Swift was the first ever recipient of the Dick Clark Award of Excellence presented to her by Diana Ross.

Carolina Hurricanes Recap: Jets and Sharks Game

Andrew Ladd as a Hurricane
Once again the Carolina Hurricanes had 3 games in 4 nights starting with the Winnipeg Jets flying in on Thursday and two old but familiar faces returning to Raleigh. Paul Maurice the 2 time Carolina coach returned with the 2004 top draft pick for the Carolina Hurricanes Andrew Ladd. The Jets saw 2 goals for assistant captain Blake Wheeler and an empty goal from Zach Bogosian. Carolina seemed flat the whole game and got a lone power-play goal from the Swedish Beast Elias Lindholm and another strong performance from Cam Ward. Ward stopped 34 of 36 shots faced and had a plethora of amazing saves; Cam Ward kept the Hurricanes within 1 for much of the game till the final minutes when he went to the bench for the extra attacker.

Saturday the Hurricanes had an early 1 PM game at TD Garden in Boston; where they face a Bruins team that was going to put up a fight after having horrible losses in their past 2 game. With Jay Harrison and Alex Semin out with injury;Cam Ward was net once again! The Hurricanes looked like they found their identity again, out shooting Boston greatly in the opening period. Hurricanes even scored first which has been hard for the team to do as of late but like everything else this season that didn't last long; Boston got two quick goals that they held for the rest of the afternoon. The only good things to come out of the Bruins game was that Juri Tlusty added to goal total on the season with 7 which is leading the team.

Quick flight back to Raleigh, the Hurricanes had a 5 PM meeting with San Jose Sharks. Upon arriving at the arena Sunday morning the Hurricanes found out they lost a very good friend Sgt. Mike Cathcart. Sgt. Cathcart lost his life in Afghanistan due to injuries sustained during combat on Friday November 14th. Sgt. Cathcart met the Hurricanes in early 2014 when the team went to Fort Bragg to practice and Sgt. Cathcart got to practice with the team and formed a tight bond with most of the players.

When the game began the Hurricanes faced Troy Grosenick a young kid from Brookfield, Wisconsin who was playing in his 1st NHL game and his family was in attendance. Once again like previous games the Hurricanes looked flat and got another unlucky bounce that ended in the back of the net and that was all that was needed. The Hurricanes posted 45 shots on the young goalie... yes 45 shots and none of them went through the first timer who looked to be a seasoned veteran. Grosenick had one memorable night that saw him break the record for most saves in an NHL debut that was previously held by Andre Gill who stopped 41 on December 23, 1967!

The Hurricanes go on a long road swing that sends them out west looking to stop this losing streak!! The Hurricanes return home on November 29th to conclude a Home & Home series with the Pittsburgh Penguins! This will mark the 1st return to Raleigh for
former Hurricanes General Manager Jim Rutherford

NC Comicon with John and Carole Barrowman

November 15 & 16, at the Carolina Theatre in downtown Durham, NC, hundreds of fans gathered together to celebrate a universal love of comics, tv shows, movies, and more at NC Comicon!  We were among those hundreds and we loved every minute of our time there!

This year, the featured guests were none other than John Barrowman (Doctor Who, Arrow, Torchwood) and his sister, Carole (author, with her brother, of Bone Quill, and Hollow Earth among others).  Saturday of the con began with a Q&A with John Barrowman.  He was filming in Vancouver the night before up until the time of his flight and arrived at the convention center just in time to start the session.  Dashing out onto the stage with luggage in tow, he began a hilarious and sincere hour of question and answer with fans.  He answered questions from his favorite color (asked by a 3 year old girl; it's Blue) to his advice for aspiring actors (don't do it unless your serious about it, and be trained in your craft). He didn't uphold his tradition of the pants drop (remember he was fresh off the plane) but he followed through and did the deed at his Sunday session, and upon request we got to hear his Scottish accent.  At the Sunday session we also learned who were the biggest stars they had in their cell phone which led to John ringing David Tennant. He's quite an entertainer!

He did a picture session with fans who had purchased tickets and he and Carole did autograph signings multiple times throughout the weekend.  They are both so gracious and great people! At one point during the photo session John whistled to quite down the crowd and asked people to please organize themselves in a better manner to avoid traffic jams in the hallway.  He had a conversation with everyone who came up to get an autograph and it didn't feel as rushed as many convention lines can.

The day consisted of many wonderful panels including how comics are conceptualized and brought to life, artist roundtables, and our personal favorite, a writing workshop with Carole Barrowman.   She gave an excellent 45 minute workshop about how to improve your writing, and it was a privilege to learn from her.  She made some excellent points, the main takeaway of which was to make sure that your writing has energy. She made the workshop interactive and captivating. We wish Carole was our English professor!

The dealer's room was filled with stalls of comic books, action figures, drawings, posters, and anything else you'd want or expect to see at a comic book convention.  We really enjoyed that the focus was actually on comic books, as some conventions have a poor selection of vendors and focus on other aspects than comics. Towards the end of the day Saturday evening  John and Carole came into the dealer's room to shop for comics.

Carole and John shopping for Comic Books

Throughout the entire weekend, Artist's Alley was filled with amazingly talented people selling prints, hairbands, jewelry boxes, drawstring bags, exclusive comic books, and so much more.  We had the pleasure of meeting Chris McJunkin, a freelance illustrator who is currently working on Zero's Heroes for New Haven Comics.  He had some amazing pieces for sale, including some Doctor Who and Star Wars pieces.  We also had a chance to speak with Kelly Yates, an artist best known for his work on Doctor Who comics at IDW.  He told an awesome story about one particular piece he did featuring the Eleventh Doctor and Amy and Rory.  The goal of the piece was to combine all the Doctors in one image; BBC was concerned about doing so, but they loved his piece so much that they approved it the minute they saw it.

One of the greatest things about being a part of this amazing community of fans is that giving back is a big part of who we are and what we do.  Throughout the weekend, we encountered many artists who were giving some of their proceeds to charities.  The 501st Legion had a raffle to raise money for the Make-a-Wish Foundation.  The grand prize included books, shirts, artwork, comics, action figures, and few other Star Wars trinkets.  Many vendors were donating a portion of their profits to charities of their choice, including one vendor who donated half of his proceeds to Wounded Warrior Project.  He had many tin signs, featuring some favorite comic book heroes.

Comic conventions are one of the best places to see cosplayers, including many quality costumes. Throughout the entire weekend, we saw many Doctors, several Jack Harknesses, a bunch of Wonder Women, a baby Spider-Man, and Belle from Beauty and the Beast. We even saw the Tenth Doctor walking K-9!

The Doctor walking K-9!

Overall, NC Comicon was a terrific weekend!  As mentioned before, this was a comicon that truly focused on the comics, with a splash of television and film.  With a unique collection of venders, artists, guests, cosplayers, and visitors, it's no wonder that NC Comicon is one of the best in the state.  If you are ever given the opportunity to go, you will not be sorry.

Carolina Hurricanes Recap on Blue Jackets and Flames Games!!

Playing 3 games in 4 nights the Carolina Hurricanes have kept a 6 game point streak alive and have won 5 of their last 6 games. Extending a 3 game win streak on Friday night to 4 games then going to Washington to loss to the Capitals with 14 seconds left in OT. After a well deserved day of rest the Hurricanes were back in action Monday night against a "Flaming" hot Calgary!

Friday night again the Blue Jackets was more than just a hockey game, it was also the Hurricanes time to show support for the league wide Hockey Fights Cancer. There were 7 local cancer awareness charities that were in attendance that got a donation from the Hurricanes organization. The Hurricanes fought back to push the game to overtime with another great performance by Cam Ward. With 37 seconds left in OT Elias Lindholm once again lit the lamp for the game winner!

Cam Ward
The Hurricanes then took a quick flight to DC where they would face a familiar face in Justin Peters between the pipes for the Capitals.  Once again for the second night in a row the Hurricanes were playing from behind; but with the persistence this team has been playing with lately they battled back to push the game to OT and get another point in the standings. Even though Ward got a well deserved night off, Dobby played a good game till 14 seconds left in OT when Backstrom cashed in on a rebound from a heavy Ovechkin shot.

Sunday practice was canceled at RCI and when the Hurricanes returned to the ice on Monday they were ready to go looking for 2 more points. Cam Ward looking for his 5th win in a row as the started got his wish by stopping 22 of 23 Calgary shots. Justin Faulk had a big night getting the game winning goal as well as 2 assists. Tim Gleason collected his 1st of the season with a great set up by Jeff Skinner. Skinny had a big night as well with 1 assist and 1 goal!! That goal turned out to be his 100th career NHL goal.
Skinner 100th Goal Puck

The Hurricanes have seemed to turn it around after a HORRIBLE month of October and are starting to find their identity as a team.

Hurricanes play again at PNC on Thursday night to face former coach Paul Maurice and the Winnipeg Jets.

Regular Season Game 4: Kings Vs. Hurricanes

Chris Terry
The Hurricanes finished October with a record of 0-6-2; but when the calendar changed to November so did the Hurricanes. For the first time this season the Hurricanes have a win streak of 2 after defeating the Stanley Cup Champion LA Kings 3-2. After coming off the win the night before the Hurricanes came out a little slow allowing the Kings to get some good offensive chance but Cam Ward shined again for the second night in a row; Ward stopped 30 out of 32 shots faced.
Justin Williams

When the LA Kings came into Carolina they were already having a tough trip East losing the first 3 games and still looking for the 1st road win of the season. The Conn Smythe winner Justin Williams made his return to Raleigh; Williams is a beloved former Hurricane who was traded to the Kings in 2009 and has been an instrumental part of there success as well.

Victor Rask
Hurricanes got out to an early 2-0 lead with goals from Victor Rask and Chris Terry; that was Rask 1st NHL goal and Terry got another powerplay goal for the Canes. With that power play goal the Hurricanes are 8-34 on the season. The Kings never got a lead and never tied the game but Elias Lindholm had the game winning goal in the 2nd period and he is now on a goal streak of 2 games.

When the Hurricanes return to PNC Arena on November 7th against the Blue Jackets it will be hockey fights cancer night. So make sure you wear some lavender!!!

Regular Season Game 3: Coyotes Vs. Hurricanes

Justin Faulk
CANES WIN!!! For this 1st time in the 2014-2015 NHL season the Hurricanes get a win and its the first win since April 13, 2014! Coming off a rough road trip; the Hurricanes returned home for the first time since hosting Buffalo on October 14th. After a couple days of rest the Hurricanes welcomed Patrick Dwyer and Nathan Gerbe back to the lineup and saw Alexander Semin as a healthy extra when they hosted Arizona for the 3rd home game of the season.

Right from puck drop the Hurricanes were playing like they had something to prove and looked like a different team and the message from the coaching staff on performance was well received. Hurricanes put a total of 35 shots on goal, had an effective penalty kill and power play, as well as a huge net presence on the offense and defense ends. Elias Lindholm got his first 2 goals of the season and Juri Tlusty got a power play goal to make the 3-0 and that was also his 6th of the season and team leading goal.
Cam Ward #1 Star

Cam Ward looked like the Cam Ward of old; stopping all 25 shots and getting his first shutout since March 2012. This was a big confidence booster not only for Ward but for the team as a whole. Another standout performance tonight was that of Justin Faulk; tonight was one of his better nights of the season. He finished the game with 2 assists and 4 takeaways. That was after take a puck to the chin;

going to the dressing room to get repairs and coming back with a full cage.

Quick turn around the Hurricanes will host the Stanley Cup Champion LA Kings in a back-to-back situation tomorrow at 5pm.
