68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards

The 68th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, took place on Sunday Night September 18th.  The awards were presented during an ABC live telecast from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Kimmel's opening this year was an awesome combination of many of the nominees including People v. OJ, James Corden, and also somehow featured Jeb Bush as Veep's Selena Meyer's driver.  His monologue didn't disappoint either; it's your fault Mark Burnett and have fun at your ceramics class Dame Maggie Smith.

One of the best moments of the night included the kids from Stranger Things passing out PB&J sandwiches made by Jimmy Kimmel's mom. And of course there were a lot of political jokes.

VEEP won Outstanding Comedy Series and Julia Louis-Dreyfus won Lead Actress in a Comedy for her role in the series, her fifth win for the role.  Louie Anderson won Supporting Actor in a Comedy for his role in Baskets.  Jeffrey Tambor won Lead Actor in a Comedy for his role in Transparent, Jill Soloway also won the Emmy for Directing for the series.  Kate McKinnon won Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her role in SNL.

People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story swept the Limited Series categories winning Emmys for Writing, Supporting Actor, Lead Actress, Lead Actor, and Outstanding Series.  Supporting Actress in a limited series went to Regina King for American Crime, for the second consecutive year. Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series went to Susanne Bier for The Night Manager.

Game of Thrones won awards for Directing and Writing in a Drama Series, and Oustanding Drama Series. Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama went to Ben Mendelsohn for his role in Bloodline and Maggie Smith won Supporting Actress in a Drama for her role in Downton Abbey. Rami Malek won the Emmy for Lead Actor in a  Drama for his role in Mr. Robot and Tatiana Maslany won the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama for her role in Orphan Black.

2016 Emmys Nominations

Anthony Anderson and Lauren Graham announced the nominations for the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards live via webcast and chat from the Wolf Theatre at the Academy's newly-opened Saban Media Center.  Game of Thrones scored the most nominations with 23 for the show's sixth season followed closely by The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story which received 22 nominations. One of the most surprising, but also most deserving, entrants to the Drama Series category was The Americans which also received nominations for its lead actors Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell.

The 68th Primetime Emmy Awards are set for September 18th and will air live on ABC.

67th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards

The 67th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Andy Samberg, took place on Sunday Night September 20th.  The awards were presented during a FOX live telecast from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

In Samberg's first time as host, his opening was like the opening skit of an episode of SNL and starred some of this year's nominees...it was awesome!  It felt like he hit the nail on the head in terms of providing the new angle the Academy was looking for when they chose him as this year's host.



Some of the best moments of the night included Ricky Gervais pretending he won the Emmy, the "World's Best Boss" mug for Lorne Michaels (but actually Shonda Rimes), Andy's performance of "I'd Like to Give the World an Emmy", metal detectors on the red carpet, and Tracy Morgan's appearance to announce the winner of Outstanding Drama Series.

VEEP won Outstanding Comedy Series.  Julia Louis-Dreyfus won Lead Actress in a Comedy for her role in VEEP, and Tony Hale won Supporting Actor in a Comedy for his role in the series, his second category win for the role.  Jeffrey Tambor won Lead Actor in a Comedy for his role in Transparent, Jill Soloway also won the Emmy for Directing for the series.  Allison Janney won Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her role in Mom, her 7th career Emmy.

Olive Kitteridge swept the Limited Series categories wining 6 Emmys for Writing, Directing, Supporting Actor, Lead Actress, Lead Actor, and Outstanding Series.  The one other televised award in the category, Supporting Actress, went to Regina King for American Crime.

Game of Thrones won awards for Directing and Writing in a Drama Series, Oustanding Drama Series, and Supporting Actor in a Drama for Peter Dinklage.  Uzo Aduba won Supporting Actress in a Drama for her role in Orange is the New Black.  Jon Hamm (finally) won the Emmy for Lead Actor in a  Drama for playing Don Draper in Mad Men. Viola Davis took home Lead Actress in a Drama for How To Get Away With Murder, making her the firs African American woman to win the category.



One thing I personally enjoyed was the way they announced the nominees for Writing and Directing in a Comedy Series by asking the writers what was the hardest part of writing for a comedy and directors what are the best skills to have as a Comedy director.

Primetime Emmy Nominations 2015

At 8:30 a.m. PST/11:30 a.m. EST, Uzo Aduba of Orange is the New Black and Cat Deely, host of So You Think You Can Dance?, announced the nominations for the 2015 Primetime Emmy Awards live from the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles.

Going into the nominations, perennial favorites including Mad Men and Orange is the New Black were expected to do well, as well as some newcomers including Empire, black-ish, and Grace and Frankie.  

Game of Thrones has the most nominations with 24, including Outstanding Drama Series. Grace and Frankie were not nominated as well as expected, while Netflix comedy Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was nominated better than expected, including a nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series. Empire was largely snubbed, with only one nomination in the main acting categories of Taraji P. Henson for Lead Actress.

Andy Samberg will host the 2015 Primetime Emmy Awards on September 20.  The awards will be broadcast live on Fox from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards

The 66th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Seth Meyers, took place Monday night.  NBC made the decision to switch to a Monday this year to avoid conflict with the MTV Video Music Awards (which Seth Meyers touched upon in his opening monologue).  The awards were presented during a live NBC telecast at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

Seth Meyers made more industry targeted jokes as host, and given his comedic writing and hosting experience he was well equipped to take on the job.  Some of the best moments of the night included Billy Crystal paying tribute to his friend, the late Robin Williams, Sara Bareilles singing Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" during the In Memoriam segment, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Bryan Cranston's "Seinfield Reunion".



Breaking Bad was the night's biggest winner taking home five trophies: Outstanding  Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Bryan Cranston, Outstanding Supporting Actress and Actor in a Drama Series for Anna Gunn and Aaron Paul, and Best Writing for a Drama Series for "Ozymandias" to Moira Walley-Beckett who beat out show runner Vince Gilligan to win the category.

Modern Family was named Outstanding Comedy Series the fifth year in a row, tying Fraiser for most consecutive wins in the category.  The show also took home awards for Ty Burrell for Lead Actor and Outstanding Direction of a Comedy Series for Gail Mancuso.

Sherlock: His Last Vow won three awards including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Mini Series for Benedict Cumberbatch.  Julianna Margulies winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series was a major upset, beating out Lizzy Caplan for Masters of Sex, Robin Wright for House of Cards, and Kerry Washington for Scandal.  Netflix Series House of Cards and Orange is the New Black were all but shut outs. Orange garnered 12 nominations and only took home three awards, all at the previously held Creative Arts ceremony.

2014 Emmy Nominations

Mindy Kaling and Carson Daly announced the nominations for the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards live via webcast and chat from.  Game of Thrones and FX miniseries Fargo scored the most nominations with 19 and 18 respectively.  Netflix came out strong this year scoring lead and supporting actor nominations for Ricky Gervais in Derek, Taylor Schilling and Kate Mulgrew for Orange is the New Black, and Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright for House of Cards. With its nominations this year, Modern Family could win for a fifth year in a row, tying Fraiser for most Emmy wins, while Tatiana Maslany was snubbed once again for her role in Orphan Black. The drama categories are particularly competitive categories this year with True Detecitve choosing to submit as a drama rather than as a miniseries.

The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards are set for August 25th and will air live on NBC.
